Porch House Pub Review, Stove-on-the-Wold, England

Stow-on-the-Wold is exactly what you would picture as an old, classic English countryside town. With a population circa 2,000, the entire market town is full of history, great shopping, and winding streets. The buildings are uniform in a lovely off-white brick, and there is so much character to the place. This town is one of the best known of the small Cotswolds towns, so make sure you check it out. We headed to Porch House based on a friend’s recommendation and I am so happy we did!

Porch House is located within this little town. The reason we wanted to check it out is that it is the oldest inn in all of England. It was built in 947 A.D.! How crazy is that! It also has an adjacent pub with absolutely delicious food. The full history of this building is interesting, and you can read about that here.

We went here for breakfast on Sunday morning, and we were not disappointed. The a la carte menu includes the full breakfast buffet of bread, granola, juices, milk, etc., as well as fresh coffee and tea. I had fluffy pancakes with bacon (of course I gave that bacon to my husband), and my husband and his friend had the eggs Benedict. There was not a smidgeon of food left on our plates because it was all so tasty. I really hope you visit! To make sure you get a table, make an OpenTable reservation here.

The best part of this meal is that each person’s total added up to less than ten pounds! Coming from London, this is a steal haha. Also, if you stay at the Porch House, breakfast is included! I wish I had known about this inn earlier because we definitely would have stayed here for a night.

This unique building maintained many of its older features. You can tell that they’ve modernized the indoors because obviously nothing would have lasted from 947 A.D., but they’ve done a really good job of keeping the original vibes. They let us take a little tour of the space, and I would say the dining room is the gem. If you want to stay at this inn, make sure to book well in advance, as it only has thirteen rooms.

If you are looking for a one- or two-night getaway to the English countryside, I highly recommend checking out Porch House Inn for lodging. Its delicious food coupled with its prime location will make a very enjoyable experience for you!

Cheers,
