[No. 37] Love Is Patient

[No. 37] Love Is Patient

Something my hubster introduced into our lives when anxiety for either of us is running high is this: we sit down together with a warm drink, a sheet of paper, an inky pen, and write down everything that’s weighing us down.

I mean everything.

Even the nagging thoughts hiding in the deepest creases of our brains.

When he first asked to do this, I was like,

“NO LET ME WALLOW IN MY MISERY” (lolz).

He rolled his eyes, asked me to be patient, and continued.

After numbering each negative (and mostly false) thought, he put his pen at the top and started speaking the truth out loud, basically destroying the lies I was letting swirl around in my head.

He did that with each one and then prayed at the end that God would protect my mind and remove these thoughts.

It was a real mental detox.

It’s the best defense we’ve found to ending those sneakily strong, and noisy nuisances our minds create.

So, the next time you feel like pulling an ostrich and burying your head in the sand, leave your skepticism at the door and try this out with a patient and loving peep in yo’ life.

Hey — I wrote a book about all of this.

Living Open-Handed is the devotional I wrote during a season when I really needed to hear these words myself. If you're in a place where you need to be encouraged by scripture and softened by grace, it might be for you too.
