It’s that time of year again. We’ve all been there and done that—or at least thought about it. I’m talking of course about waking up at the crack of dawn to get your half-asleep self to the Black Friday deals.
Ever since I was a wee lass (that’s fun to say), my family and I would take all the sales papers on Thanksgiving morning and then strategize. We would make our spreadsheets, which were all separated by location, price, and item name, and then we would organize a plan to divide and conquer. Usually we saved big purchases for this day, especially electronics, but sometimes we’d add in a few items just for kicks and giggles. We would stock up on winter wear and spring wear, and add Christmas gifts for other people into our carts. We would even buy gifts for our family in India.
This was all fine and dandy until Black Friday started happening earlier and earlier. And then it finally took over Thanksgiving Day. Did you know you can hit up certain stores by noon on Thanksgiving Day?! I mean WHAT?! That tells us something about people’s priorities. Folks are lining up at stores by 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, and that’s not just in the USA. Black Friday has gone international, y’all. How can we keep holidays about spending more time with family and loved ones?

Cheers,

Hey — I wrote a book about all of this.
Living Open-Handed is the devotional I wrote during a season when I really needed to hear these words myself. If you're in a place where you need to be encouraged by scripture and softened by grace, it might be for you too.
